COVID-19, Financial Digitization and Bitcoin / Cryptocurrencies - Trends and Outlook for Markets, Regulations, and Policies

The COVID-19 response has accelerated the adoption of digital payments worldwide driven by an increase in online and contactless payments. As part of this adoption, there has also been an increase in the acceptance of Bitcoin and cryptocurrencies by major multinational corporations. Paypal, Mastercard and Visa are exploring and beginning to accept payments in Bitcoin; MicroStrategy and Tesla have invested in Bitcoin, and the Bank of New York Mellon is providing financial management services for cryptocurrencies. In Korea, CU, Korea’s largest convenience store chain accepts Paycoin cryptocurrency while Asian enterprises account for 94% of Bitcoin futures volumes. In Europe, the European Central Bank is exploring the possibility of a digital Euro.

The talk reviews trends in financial digitization; background, technology and considerations for Bitcoin, altcoins and utility tokens; and highlights of markets, policies and regulations in Asia, and Europe.
